Coloring Creole


There are a couple useful colors that do not appear above:

1. White = blan (masculine), blansh (feminine)
2. Silver = arjen (same word for ‘money’ = larjen)
3. Gold = or/doré
4. Dark Green = vèr fonsé, Vèr-vèr; vær fonsé, vær-vær
5. Dark Blue = blé fonsé, blé-blé
6. Dark Brown = brun fonsé, brun-brun
7. Olive = oliv, koulèr mat
8. Off white = koulèr mat, blan kasé
9. Eggshell = blan kasé

Skin colors

1. White = blan
2. Very white = blan-blan
3. White Olive = oliv
4. Olive = oliv, grif
5. Dark Olive = byin oliv, grif, moka-milat
6. Tan(tannish) = milat
7. Fair (yellow undertone) = klèr/klær, jonn
8. Fair (red undertone) = manyær/manyè rouj
9. Very dark (regardless of undertone) = nèg-nèg
10. Black = nèg
11. Very black = karenkro, blé

Excercises:

1. Syèl-la, li blé ojordi.
The sky is blue today.

2. Fèy-la tourné zoranj et rouj en otonn.
Those leaves turn orange and rouge in automn.

3. Shvé a mamm, yé blan-blan.
Mom’s hair is very white.

4. Nouzòt shar çé vèr fonsé.
Our car is evergreen (dark green).

5. Mo sortí jonn, mé mô sè/sœr sortí blan.
I came out yellow, but my sister came out white.

6. Fanm-la, li gin zyé blé-blé-blé.
That lady has the bluest eyes.

7. Mô granpopa li travayé un tá dan klo, ça fé li té fonsé.
My grandpa worked a lot in the fields, so he was dark.
